The Alt-Car Exp at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on Fri and Saturday should be alot of fun for transit riders- there is a presentation by students from the students at the Pasadena Art Center working with BBB on the bus of thefuture!
And, you can use your BruinCard to get there for just 25 cents!
5 Big Blue Bus lines that service the Westside start and end at UCLA, and the Culver City bus (green bus) also has a few buses that come here. It’s just 25 cents with your bruin card. If you are a frequent user of these two lines, you can buy a flash pass from the UCLA transportation website

It’s easier than you think to get out of Westwood, so get out and enjoy L.A. while you’re here!
I suspect my commute is a bit more complicated than average. I use 3(4) different transit services (Foothill Transit, MetroRail, Metro Rapid, Big Blue Bus) to get to UCLA. I use the EZ Pass (with a zone 3 sticker). That costs me $124 a month. Given how often I come in, it’s not necessarily cheaper than paying the fares with cash, but it’s far more convenient than counting quarters and dimes every day.
Does anyone know of a better discount than EZ Pass?
By the way, thinking about writing a LA Transit Commuter Companion iPhone app. If you a. have an iPhone and b. use the mass transit a lot in LA, what would you find useful in such an app? Bus schedules, of course. Route Planner? Bus arrival times? Points of interests? Some kind of fellow bus rider social network capability?
Hi Albert – are you saying you are thinking about writing such an app? That would be incredible!!!
I have the UCLA Flash Pass for the Big Blue Bus and Culver City Bus – it’s awesome! I can the Super 12 to UCLA and arrive in about 30 min, which is much better than driving and paying for parking, and gas. I also signed up for Zipcar so when I need a car for an appointment throughout the day I can reserve one online and speed around town! Check out http://www.zipcar.com
@Diana: There is news from Apple developers community that “mass transit directions” will be available within Google Maps in the upcoming version of iPhone OS update (2.2). If that is true, and it does what I hope it does, and it services the LA area, then I won’t have to write that app. Oohoo!!
In case the feature falls through, I’ll move ahead with developing the app I described. Let’s cross our fingers.

@Albert: You know what? I just got a BlackBerry (8330) and downloaded the Google Maps App, and there is acutally an option to get directions for transit! You enter your starting point and end point and can select to get driving directions, transit directions and WALKING directions, too!! I guess you’re off the hook!!
